INSULIN blocks fat metabolism.
EH?
INSULIN blocks fat metabolism.
In case your wondering, INSULIN is a hormone produced by the pancreas that converts blood glucose to energy. It acts by unlocking cell doorways so that the glucose can travel inside, where by a sort of mini nuclear reaction occurs and creates energy for your body.
So what’s the big deal here then? Doesn’t sound that critical, does it? Insulin appears within the blood stream in the presence of sugar/glucose, that’s cakes, pasta, crisps, chocolate, cookies etc, you get the picture. While your blood stream is flooded with glucose, insulin comes out to do its job of sweeping all the excess glucose out of your blood and into the cells for energy. Your liver is also doing some of the work by converting the glucose to fat and glycogen, this also serves to lower the blood sugar level quicker. If these processes didn’t occur we’d be in serious trouble, since high levels of glucose cause serious damage to just about every part of your body. Its like acid in your system, wreaking havoc as it goes. Its not uncommon for diabetics who have maintained a poor blood sugar level for a prolonged period of time to suffer limb amputations, blindness and serious cardiovascular conditions. So you see, insulin plays an important part in keeping your blood sugar at a safe level but while this process is in action, fat metabolism takes a back bench. This makes perfect sense since your body is gaining energy from glucose, why would it need to dig into its fat for a second source of fuel.
AAH you may ask, if we are supposed to use fat as our primary source of fuel, why then, do our bodies have the function of carbohydrate metabolism?
Because regardless of modern cultivated and processed foods, foods that had no place in our food chain thousands of years ago, there still existed food that were made up largely of carbohydrate. Berries and fruits would be the first two that spring to mind. If the body didn’t have the ability to deal with these types of foods then we would have all died out a long time ago from chronically raised blood sugar levels. Effectively man would have been born a diabetic but without the necessary medication to control it.
Not only that but the body is continually creating its own glucose, glycogen, even when there is no food present. This is done by converting protein, through a process know as gluconeogenesis. Our glycogen stores are readily available for times of increased activity and emergency, since glycogen is a much faster acting form of fuel than fat and once broken down by yet another agent know as glucagon, becomes - you guessed it GLUCOSE. So you see, there really is no escaping the stuff, we need it for various functions, this is why our body has deemed it necessary to create its own, even in the total absence of sugar from your diet.
IN A NUTSHELL: The more insulin present in your blood, the less your body is going to rely on converting fat stores into energy, thus the weight stays on.
